Journey from stark matte to watercolour fun

As soon as I saw this article online last week, I was itching to do this combo … so itchy, in fact, that I initially rushed into it with no cuticle or nail prep whatsoever and put a shiny top coat on it in lieu of matte, due to not giving a careful read to the step-by-step …

After only one day of quasi-hiding my hands, I redid the whole thing, using the Lippmann products I have:

1x Sally Hansen 18k Gold Nail Hardener

1x DL Gel Lab Pro Dirty Little Secret

1x DL Like Dreamers Do

1x Claire’s Matte Top Coat (honking bottle on sale many moons ago for $2 USD)

Since both models in the article images have darker and warmer skin tones than I, little miss pink- and blueberry, I was slightly disappointed by my own results. Maybe if I had had la Lippmann herself tending to my hands with the entire luxe gamut of her products, the result would have been more similar.

When flipping through the April 2018 edition of U.S. Elle, I homed in on the amazing beauty that is Kim K-W, this month’s cover girl and feature, and … on her manicure!

Right? Kris Jenner sure has produced some beautiful offspring …

Meanwhile, the weekend rolled right on up and I had some colour play on my mind.

These I’ve amassed sporadically, and always from discounters.

At first, I intended to use my untouched set of four Wet n Wild LE sheer jellies — in the bottles, they appear too similar to each other.

Chromatic Orange

I’m Never Amberrassed

I Can Teal You Like Me

Indigo Motif

Don’t Violet Me Down

I was in a big hurry to get to playing with these, too, so my hands and cuticles are frightfully unmoisturized in the iPhone snaps above …

Two days later, above … I had left my right hand without colour and wanted to take a photo of *it* holding this sample card, in front of the Kim K-W photo since the pool tile pattern in the photo mimics the BV intrecchiato replicated on the sample card … a task proven nigh impossible with my regular camera.

Little Sunday-into-Monday nails

Not too long ago, whilst indulging my perpetual curiosity online, I suddenly craved ownership of a certain two Lynderellas like nobody’s business: A Neutral Party and Puppy Cake.

Being that I’ve not ever worn a one of the Lynnderella residents currently leading the life of Riley in a top drawer of the Alex varnish condo, I abstained from immediate purchase of the two aforementioned. Instead, I got to work scouting other floors of the condo, chasing the varnish visions dancing in my head.

I didn’t have to look far: everything my little nails were wishing for (neutral but sparkly, tiny black dots, holo microshimmer, gold, silver, bronze and then some) turned out to be in residence — no spending the winter out at the warehouse for these favourites!

Problem child extraordinaire and confirmed favourite, Big Universo Canel

Sally Hansen CSM Paparazzi, Anna Sui 32C

China Glaze I’m Not Lion, OPI Wonderous Star

A member of the Etude House x Annika Wester Wannabe Syrup Nails trio
Maybelline Color Show The Nudes LE Bronze Beam

In an abundance of caution, because my formerly known as long nails were catching on my tights, splitting and peeling per usual, I thought to start things off right on Sunday with a base coat of this 18k gold hardener.

The subtle flakes add a neat underlayer dimension to one coat of transparent Canel …

The brushes I used to execute my idea on oh-so-tiny canvasses:

Slanted tip Impala – SH CSM Paparazzi, one coat gradient effect

Mint green fan – Anna Sui 32C, one swipe on tips

Essence denser fan – China Glaze I’m Not Lion, one swipe on tips

OPI Wonderous Star – daubed on very edge of nails with bottle brush, which netted a surprising density of little black dots

Impala fan brush – Etude House glitter, one swipe a little farther down the nail than the others, to about 1/4 – 1/2 of Paparazzi

Maybelline Color Show Bronze Beam – laid bottle brush flat on its side at intervals on tips

Finally, 1-2 coats of Rimmel Base + Top Coat.

Before polishing my nails, I had done two rounds of Gena Cuticle Remover (which contains lots of naturally-derived hydroxy and salicylic acids, but no lye or ammonia products that I could spot) in addition to nail oils, cuticle oils and Lush Charity Pot.

To the naked eye, my efforts appeared to be effective. iPhone images, however, are unforgiving, detecting and magnifying every flaw. Even if I wanted to correct the imperfections visible in the photos of my nails above, I couldn’t — they just don’t show up in real life (thank goodness)!

Last image was taken in my car, Monday afternoon sun.

International zingy chingy roundtable

These bottles had convened long before and in honour of St. Patrick’s Day … but the varnish ambassadress herself missed the boho boat 😦

The sleek, jeweled Italians: Kiko 392, 533, 535, 536

The luxuriously swank Poles: Inglot 138, 320, 981, 986, 966 (which I had misread upside down as 996, thus it’s out of numerical order)

The cosmopolitan yet unjaded Americans: Urban Outfitters Green (multichrome), Destined Take A Hike, Zoya Edyta, SH Insta-Dri Emerald Express

The filthy rich yet understated Brits: A-England Dragon, Saint George, Proserpine

A stunningly glamorous Swede, Make Up Store Charmaine, accompanied but not outdone by gem-bedecked Italian Layla, Emerald Divine

And they sit down to wine and dine, dazzled by one other’s unique beauty at two coats!

Collections: A England – Tennyson’s Romance

Cropped image of King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid, 1884, by Edward Burne-Jones

Puff puff … I’m so behind! Spring has almost sprung, and I’m still happily, richly swathed in beauteous dark and heavy tapestry from last November 🙂

This is the first collection I’ve ever ordered in its entirety both upon first sight + sight unseen, as they say. Absolutely no regrets.

Live Love Polish really wowed me with their incredible packaging and speedy delivery. Last Thanksgiving break, I was headed out on a week-long road trip and had my fingers crossed that an express-delivery varnish box would serendipitously land on my doorstep before it was time to make the looong haul across the looong state of California. LLP came through with flying colours, literally and figuratively, lol!  I remain truly grateful.

Her arms across her breast she laid;
She was more fair than words can say:

Bare-footed came the beggar maid
Before the king Cophetua.

In robe and crown the king stept down,
To meet and greet her on her way;

“It is no wonder,” said the lords,
“She is more beautiful than day”.

As shines the moon in clouded skies,
She in her poor attire was seen:

One praised her ancles, one her eyes,

One her dark hair and lovesome mien:

So sweet a face, such angel grace,

In all that land had never been:

Cophetua sware a royal oath:

“This beggar maid shall be my queen!”

Three coats each, excepting first two swatch photos … those were taken earlier, at two coats.

Since I had dallied so long, I refreshed the chips with a third coat for the more recent photos.

Backgrounds are from a Vogue Italia editorial, A Charming Blend by Corinne Day, December 2005.
