Journey from stark matte to watercolour fun

As soon as I saw this article online last week, I was itching to do this combo … so itchy, in fact, that I initially rushed into it with no cuticle or nail prep whatsoever and put a shiny top coat on it in lieu of matte, due to not giving a careful read to the step-by-step …

After only one day of quasi-hiding my hands, I redid the whole thing, using the Lippmann products I have:

1x Sally Hansen 18k Gold Nail Hardener

1x DL Gel Lab Pro Dirty Little Secret

1x DL Like Dreamers Do

1x Claire’s Matte Top Coat (honking bottle on sale many moons ago for $2 USD)

Since both models in the article images have darker and warmer skin tones than I, little miss pink- and blueberry, I was slightly disappointed by my own results. Maybe if I had had la Lippmann herself tending to my hands with the entire luxe gamut of her products, the result would have been more similar.

When flipping through the April 2018 edition of U.S. Elle, I homed in on the amazing beauty that is Kim K-W, this month’s cover girl and feature, and … on her manicure!

Right? Kris Jenner sure has produced some beautiful offspring …

Meanwhile, the weekend rolled right on up and I had some colour play on my mind.

These I’ve amassed sporadically, and always from discounters.

At first, I intended to use my untouched set of four Wet n Wild LE sheer jellies — in the bottles, they appear too similar to each other.

Chromatic Orange

I’m Never Amberrassed

I Can Teal You Like Me

Indigo Motif

Don’t Violet Me Down

I was in a big hurry to get to playing with these, too, so my hands and cuticles are frightfully unmoisturized in the iPhone snaps above …

Two days later, above … I had left my right hand without colour and wanted to take a photo of *it* holding this sample card, in front of the Kim K-W photo since the pool tile pattern in the photo mimics the BV intrecchiato replicated on the sample card … a task proven nigh impossible with my regular camera.

Collections: Sinful Colors Kylie + Sinful Shine King Kylie

When these collections appeared last year, I remember being absolutely enchanted by North Star first, then picking up a smattering of others here and there whenever popping into Walgreens. Later, I found a few bottles heavily discounted at Target, and was really surprised by the defacement of the display for this collection. Insults and ugliness, left in nail varnish and ink, directed at Miss Jenner. Whatever her reputation among the target (and Target, lol) demographic for her cosmetics, my opinion of her collaboration is sky-high. So much so that when I came upon scads of half-price bottles at a different well-stocked Walgreens locale, I shopped to my nails’ content. No regrets; here’s what I have.

These four are Trend Matters Angel shimmer mattes:

Twenty-six bottles in all.

Unsure how many comprised the collections; I’m not fan enough to do intensive Internet homework so it was difficult to decipher on my own what was what in order to break down what I had.

Since I had initially filled up a wheel of 18 chips with what I had (not anticipating buying more), they were organized by colour on the wheel and in my notebook by collection/finish.

That was last year.  When I ended up collecting eight more bottles in the interim, I just put them in the box shown in the background and saved it all for another day.

Those bottles ended up on a different nail wheel, just painted.  Lots of work and confusion!

Now for some comparisons among other similar Sinful Colors 🙂

Comparisons: reigning at the purple palace

Picking up from where I had left off earliest here and here and later, here …

Last year, when I had initially begun the PFF pile driving using OPI purples as cornerstones for comparison, I had only listed two varnishes in my notebook as pile drivers to OPI In the Cable Car-pool Lane:  Sation Purple Royal and Barry M Berry Cosmo.

Since then, I’ve acquired several more, which also happen to conveniently encompass part two of my Valentine tale of two Revlons (never got ’round to the telling of the second chapter …) 🙂

Above, at two coats, from L to R:

1 – Sation Purple Royal

2 – WnW So Berry on Trend (velvety matte)

3 – Kiko 496

4 – OPI Casino Royale

5 – Revlon Passionate

6 – Barry M Berry Cosmo

7 – OPI In the Cable Car-Pool Lane (only varnish with 3x, as it was patchy at two …)

8 – Essie In the Lobby

Essence still holds her own among these stunners even though she’s matte.  Gorgeous finish!

SONY DSC

Pop-arazzi has that Made in China chemical stonk, a la Kleancolor.

I only bought more of this brand cos it was on sale.

Dior Wonderland

Barry M GHS Grapefruit

Maybelline Color Show Rebel Bouquet LE Rose Candy

Essence C&G Candy Crush (matte)

Pop-arazzi Watermelon Spritz

All, 2x.

Each was fine with one coat excepting Dior, which evened out beautifully to opacity on the second coat.

Maybelline was her usual very thin formula and could have used three coats…

There are subtle distinctions among these varnishes, but truly, the most glaring is price point.

Each is infinitely more beautiful than she appears here.  No justice done in these images.

Since there are five, I can’t wait to do a Skittles with this lineup!

It’s a good thing, as I would not know which colour to choose for my juicy bright watermelon tips craving.

I was absolutely smitten by these two SH CSM varnishes from the new NYFW collection.

When I brought them home together last week, I had no idea they would be so close to OPI and Essie…

Ugh, I’m stuffed!

This post took forever (way past Valentine’s Day, yes?) to put together, and the display of sweets isn’t over yet — I omitted Essie Cashmere Matte Wrap Me Up from the Vanilla Buttercream lineup, so will include her in part two, where I’ll swatch and compare the assortments above.

The Skinfood trio set also deserves its own post and commentary — después de haberme desempalagado (after getting rid of this sickeningly sweet feeling). 🙂

Not saving the best for last, in order to get your attention without alluding directly to the 50 SoG movie adaptation tie-in hype.

First obliquely referenced here, a couple of years ago…

…but actually an addendum to this post, from a couple of months ago.

These are all of the greys I have acquired from December 2014-January 2015, post-post. 🙂

SONY DSC

All swatches shown are 2 coats each.

Aux Chandelles is semi-matte, with a sort of lustre to keep it from looking flat.  Very subtle and unique.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Skull & Glossbones is rather sheer and jelly-ish, a yellowed bone grey in comparison to the others.  I included it here solely because I spent the latter part of 2014 filling gaps in my collection, and certain members of the OPI Pirates of the Caribbean collection were indeed coveted and lacking, due to lingering swapper’s remorse…

I acquired GOSH and NARS due to Ommorphia Beauty Bar’s waxing poetic about this duo.  No regrets. 🙂

China Glaze Out Like A Light applies much, much darker than the bottle color.  The same thing happened with Zoya Dove in 2011, reason why I gave her away and never repurchased.

SONY DSC

Here’s a mid-point recap:

1 – no varnish

2 – H&M Urban Girl

3 – L’Oreal Aux Chandelles, semi-matte

4 – OPI Skull & Glossbones, sheer warmer-leaning crelly

5 – China Glaze Pelican Grey, microshimmer

6 – OPI Cement the Deal

7 – Barry M GHS Chai

8 – OPI Embrace the Grey

9 – Barry M Grey

10 – GOSH Miss Grey

SONY DSC

Above and below, the bluer-leaning greys.  My favorite of these lineups.

SONY DSC

Wet Suit is a wee hair lighter than Office Polish-tics.  Since Office Polish-tics is harder to come by for most, Wet Suit is current in the Sally Hansen Triple Shine display in the U.S., and a great stand-in for this variation on MAC Blue India.

SONY DSC

Misa Office Polish-tics is much more beautiful than she appears in these images.  I ordered about 25 Misa bottles from the company website late last year; it was truly one of the most pleasing parcels I’ve received of late.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

L’Oreal Grey Corset is matte, and much more muted than it appears in the image above.  It looks stormy dark grey-blue indoors.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

See what I mean about Grey Corset?  Wow!

Seriously, L’Oreal has created a very unique collection around this theme.

I didn’t like any of the L’Oreal varnishes at the first coat, or even the second, until they were fully dry.  That’s when they best manifest their unique finishes.

SONY DSC

These are the glitters I chose from the respective 50 SoG collections.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

L to R:  Misa Office Polish-tics, L’Oreal Grey Corset, OPI Shine for Me, L’Oreal Bad Bad Grey.

Bad Bad Grey is a texture/sand/sugar glitter.

I must warn you, it looks like gloppy lava on the first wet coat.  I was so disappointed, and already plotting how to get rid of it.

At two coats, dry and in low light, it still isn’t as attractive as in that first bottle shot at the beginning of this post.

But it has something else when the light hits it, a kind of mystique.  Although the sugary glitter looks predominantly pink and coppery-gold above, there is a veritable (albeit subtle) finely-ground rainbow, including silver, in the mix.  Truly complex and mind-blowing.

I find the L’Oreal collection to be much more original than OPI’s; I could easily return the trio of OPI I selected with no qualms…
